Everything You Need To Know About Putting Your Cat Into A Cattery.

What is a cattery?

A cattery is simply the cat equivalent of a dog kennel but much quieter!

Catteries are tailored to the needs of cats and are a safe place to leave your cat whilst you are on holiday or even if you are having house work done and don't want to stress out the cats too much.

A cattery will be able to house cats of the same family together to help ensure that no unnecessary upset is experienced but not all cats within the same household get along so housing them separately shouldn't be a problem.

Catteries will encourage you to bring some home comforts with you to help settle them in.  Having familiar scents around them during their stay can help them feel more at home.

Preparing your cat

Most cats are known to dislike their cat carriers and only associate it with being taken to the vets. Cat carriers are typically put away and out of sight when not in use however it can be a good idea to leave the carrier out at home so your cat can become familiar with it and sometimes even use it as a safe place they can hide in when scared. Leaving cat carriers out results in making it much easier to get your cat into when needed. I can understand not everyone will want a cat carrier out all the time especially when its not used often so taking the carrier out a week or so before needed it is a good way to get your cat used to it and not running off to hide at the first sight if it.

It is always a good idea to ensure that you cat is up to date with its vaccinations and flea and worming treatments a couple of weeks before going into the cattery. It can also be helpful to make the cattery aware of any likes and dislikes that your cat may have when it comes to food (some catteries will supply foods but always good to check they supply the food your cats loves) , if they liked being picked up, if they dont like being stroked in certain places and if they are able to jump or may require a ramp.
